What and How is Original Medicare Used?
Original Medicare is the traditional, fee-for-service Medicare program provided by the federal government. It consists of two parts: Part A and Part B. If you are new to Medicare, there are many options one can explore. Please BOOK AN APPOINTMENT if you have any questions or concerns. Here's a breakdown of what they cover and how it works:
What Original Medicare Covers:
Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance):
- This covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.
- Essentially, it helps pay for care you receive when you're admitted to a hospital or other qualifying facility.
Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance):
- This covers doctor's services, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical supplies.
- It helps pay for things like doctor's visits, lab tests, and medical equipment.
How Original Medicare Is Used:
Fee-for-Service:
- Original Medicare operates on a fee-for-service basis. This means that Medicare pays directly to healthcare providers for the services you receive.
- You can generally go to any doctor, hospital, or other healthcare provider in the United States that accepts Medicare.
Paying Your Share:
While Original Medicare covers a significant portion of your healthcare costs, you'll typically be responsible for:
- Deductibles: The amount you pay before Medicare starts paying.
- Coinsurance: A percentage of the cost you pay after you meet your deductible.
- Copayments: A fixed amount you pay for certain services.
Flexibility:
- One of the key advantages of Original Medicare is its flexibility. You don't need referrals to see specialists, and you can choose from a wide range of providers nationwide. It is not like Medicare Advantage (Part C).
Things to Consider:
- Original Medicare does not typically cover prescription drugs. For prescription drug coverage, you can enroll in a separate Medicare Part D plan.
- Also Original Medicare does not cover most long term care. Because of this many people will purchase Medicare supplemental insurance, also known as Medigap.
IMPORTANT
Although the information provided can be helpful, it should not override human assistance and it can change at any time. I take heart to an individual's health and financial concerns toward Health Insurance as though I have them. I highly encourage you to BOOK AN APPOINTMENT with me to explore those options.
